In Reading, we continued in our fourth reading unit, Readers Learn About the World (Nonfiction) and took our Reading AIMS Web Assessment. This week students learned to:
- Use questions as a tool for learning.
- Study each page carefully as one page can teach you so much.
- Stop and chat about what's happening to learn even more.
- Reread to make sure they understand their books.
This week we zoomed in on the following Non-Fiction Text Book Features: sections, table of contents, photographs, and labels. We learned about them in class and were on the hunt for them in our non-fiction books.
We also read and learned about Martin Luther King Jr. We learned about the life and legacy of MLK and how he had a dream that everyone would be treated fairly. We saw that we can continue to work toward his dream by treating each other with kindness and fairness. Listen to this story as a review.
In Word Study, we learned that when we hear the "j" sound at the end of a short vowel word we spell it "dge." We also reviewed "tch" (comes at the end of a short vowel word) and "dge" to commit them to memory. We learned the heart word "move" and reviewed, woman, women and move. Please practice the following this coming week:
In Math, we learned how to write numbers to represent different base-ten representations, add two-digit numbers and a multiple of 10, and how to compare two-digit numbers based on the value of the tens and ones digits. We also learned how to use "greater than" and "less than" to describe comparisons. Listen to this song as a review. We also took our Math AIMSWeb Assessment.
In Science, we saw that scientists observe, wonder, and ask questions in order to solve problems. We looked at some cool science specimens and had some wonderings and questions of our own. Ask your child what they observed and wondered about. We also looked at the traits of parents and offspring. We learned how to compare their traits to find similarities and differences and found that parents and offspring are alike, but not exactly the same. Next week we will start looking at how traits and behaviors help animals survive.
