In Writing
we
continued writing "All About" books to teach readers about different topic. Students learned how to keep the reader in mind as they write by thinking of questions the reader might have. We also learned how to write a twin sentence to help our reader better understand the topic
  • Example of a twin sentence:
    • An otter is a mammal. Mammals have fur and warm blood.
    • A tiger is a carnivore. Carnivores eat meat.
Watch these videos for a quick review of how to write All About books:

In Readingwe continued reading Non-Fiction books and learning about Non-Fiction Text Features. This week students learned how to:
  • Read fluently with proper stress and intonation.
  • Ask and answer non-fiction questions.
This week we zoomed in on the following Non-Fiction Text Features: different style and size words, diagrams, headings, and maps. We also attended the Grade 1 January Assembly.

In Word Study, we learned that vowels in words ending in ild, old, ind, olt and ost will make the long sound. We also learned that when "y" is found at the end of a one syllable word it will make the long "e" sound. The new heart words both, four and fourth were introduced. Please practice the following this week:

In Mathwe learned how to (1) read and write comparisons using <,>, or =, (2 ) how to to compare and order numbers based on the value of the tens and ones digits, and (3) how to understand that a two-digit number can be represented in different ways using tens and ones.

In Sciencewe had a STEAM lesson on Parent and Offspring. We built and coded a spinning game where we matched animal parents to their offspring.

We also continued to notice that parents and offspring are similar, but not exactly the same. Students took a formative assessment to demonstrate their understanding of Bend 2.

In Writingwe took our Pre-Assessment for nonfiction, started our third writing unit, "All About" Books (Nonfiction) and had a Second grade class come share their published nonfiction books with us. We learned so much from our 2nd grade friends! We are excited to try these things in our writing! Pre-Assessment were sent home earlier this week. This week students learned the difference between fiction and non-fiction, brainstormed topic they were experts on and started planning their first "All About" book. The goal is to teach our readers "All About" a topic. We will be learning different craft moves throughout this unit and how to incorporate all the nonfiction text features we are learning about during our reading block. Ask your child what they decided to write about. Watch these videos for a quick review of how to write All About books:

In Reading, we continued in our fourth reading unit, Readers Learn About the World (Nonfiction) and took our Reading AIMS Web Assessment. This week students learned to:
  • Use questions as a tool for learning.
  • Study each page carefully as one page can teach you so much.
  • Stop and chat about what's happening to learn even more.
  • Reread to make sure they understand their books.
This week we zoomed in on the following Non-Fiction Text Book Features: sections, table of contents, photographs, and labels. We learned about them in class and were on the hunt for them in our non-fiction books.

We also read and learned about Martin Luther King Jr. We learned about the life and legacy of MLK and how he had a dream that everyone would be treated fairly. We saw that we can continue to work toward his dream by treating each other with kindness and fairness. Listen to this story as a review.

In Word Study, we learned that when we hear the "j" sound at the end of a short vowel word we spell it "dge." We also reviewed "tch" (comes at the end of a short vowel word) and "dge" to commit them to memory. We learned the heart word "move" and reviewed, woman, women and move. Please practice the following this coming week:

In Mathwe learned how to write numbers to represent different base-ten representations, add two-digit numbers and a multiple of 10, and how to compare two-digit numbers based on the value of the tens and ones digits. We also learned how to use "greater than" and "less than" to describe comparisons. Listen to this song as a review. We also took our Math AIMSWeb Assessment.

In Science, we saw that scientists observe, wonder, and ask questions in order to solve problems. We looked at some cool science specimens and had some wonderings and questions of our own. Ask your child what they observed and wondered about. We also looked at the traits of parents and offspring. We learned how to compare their traits to find similarities and differences and found that parents and offspring are alike, but not exactly the same. Next week we will start looking at how traits and behaviors help animals survive.

In Writingwe took this week to publish our Book Reviews. We look forward to sharing them with you during our next Student Led Conference in March. Next week we will take our pre-assessment and start our third writing unit, All About Books (Nonfiction).

In Reading, we launched our fourth reading unit, Readers Learn About the World (Nonfiction). We learned how to take a sneak peek and how to study each page carefully. We saw that non-fiction books have different text features than fiction. Here are the features we will be taking a closer look at throughout this unit:

In Word Study, we learned about syllables and trigraph "tch". We learned that a syllable is a word or part of a word with one vowel sound. An open syllable has a long vowel sound. A closed syllable has a short vowel sound. We also learned that "tch" is used at the end of short vowel words. The "t" is silent. We learned the following heart words: been, into, friend, because, woman & women. Please practice the following this coming week:

In Mathwe continued learning about larger numbers in Unit 4, Numbers to 99. This week we learned how to read two-digit numbers and saw that all two-digit numbers are composed of tens and ones.

We learned how to interpret and make different base-ten representations of two-digit numbers (drawings, words, and addition expressions).
