In Readingwe continued on our quest to become word detectives. Our goal is to earn our Detective Badge! We keep receiving secret missions from the Secret Service Detective Agency. This week we investigated the following:

  • What makes a good reading partner?
  • How can we read snap words in a snap?
  • How can we use snap words to figure out what would make sense?
  • How can we solve mystery words by thinking of similar snap words?
Reading Homework Tip-When your child makes a blooper (skips a word, mumbles through a word, says the incorrect word, etc.) simply hold up your hand and say stop. Don't tell them which blooper they made. They will reread the sentence and see if they can find the mistake. If they don't find it, point to the word to give them another try. If they still can't figure it out, rather than tell them the word, give them a few clues to solve it (the vowel says this....the initial sound is this....the final sound is this...). If they still can't get it, simply give them the word. And don't forget to read to your child often!

In Writingstudents learned how to judge their collections fairly, how to pick a Best in Show, and come up with three supporting reasons. Students also learned how to respectfully disagree with others and how to persuade others to maybe change their opinion.

In Word Study, we reviewed digraphs and learned about how "Bossy E" impacts the vowel a. Please watch the Bossy E video as a review. We also learned the new heart word, who. Please practice the following this week:

In Math, we learned that we can find the differences within 10 by using the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students also worked to solve add to and put together story problems with unknowns in all positions. Have your child work on the following story problems as a review. Have them write an equation, make a model with labels, and write the answer with a label.

We also learned that 10 ones is a unit called ten. Students worked to compose and decompose teen numbers into 1 ten and some number of ones. Give your child teen numbers and ask them to represent (draw) them and write an equation to match.

We also played a math Kahoot iPad game for Halloween and had some pumpkin fun! We guessed whether our class pumpkin would sink or float. The kids were surprised to discover that pumpkins float. We estimated our class pumpkin's weight, size, number of lines, and number of seeds inside. Then we worked to see how close we were. We cut open the pumpkin, counted the seeds, and then carved it into a jack-o'-lantern.

In Social Studies, we decided who to interview in our SAS community. The class decided we should get to know our Principal Mr. Hoss, our Grade 1 Dean Mr. Dylan, our PE teacher Mr. Byron, an art teacher and one of our librarian IAs. Students interviewed their community member and asked them about their responsibilities and likes/dislikes. Ask your child who they interviewed and what they learned about them. We also celebrated Halloween. We danced, rotated around through some fun carnival type stations, and enjoyed some Halloween snacks. Thank you parents for your help with our celebration!
